Every year around Memorial Day, Mount Moriah is fortunate to receive the attention of some very dedicated individuals who will once again be visting the cemetery to plant flags for veterans and also to do some general cleanup of the place. This year, a large number of people will be converging upon Mount Moriah to pay tribute to the thousands of veterans buried there, along with picking up of trash and debris.
I will be bringing my digital camera to take photos of the headstones within the cemetery. These photos will be added to the interment database that I am developing as a way of tracking and archiving the plots within the cemetery. This is a monumental task, one which I cannot do alone. Anyone willing to take photos and send them to me would be extremely helpful; anyone who wants details on how this can be accomplished should contact

I hope to see some of you there. Andrew Carr, in his email below, advises to bring some protective gear!
From Andrew J. Carr, Commander, Anna Marie Ross Camp #1:
"The Anna Marie Ross Camp #1, Dept. of PA, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, will once again be placing flags on the graves of our veterans buried in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Each year we place several thousand flags on veterans graves throughout the greater Philly area.
We will meet at The Frankford Memorial Monument in Cedar Hill Cemetery on Sat. May 21, 2005 at 10AM to distribute flags there, as well as North Cedar Hill & East Cedar Hill. When completed, we move to Lawnview Cemetery in Rockledge (Montgomery County) to distribute flags. Lawnview Cemetery is now the final resting place of our Camp's namesake, Civil War Nurse, Anna Marie Ross. She was re-interred there after Monument Cemetery was removed.
On Sunday May 22, 2005 we will distribute flags at Mt. Moriah, meeting on the Philly side at 9AM at the Hospital Plot. When we are done there, we will move to the Delaware County side of Mt. Moriah & then further on to the National Cemetery plot.
We could use help & all are welcome to join us. As you know, conditions in Mt. Moriah are grave (no pun intended) & volunteers with weed-wackers, lawnmowers, pruners, gloves, etc. will help the work go smoothly. Bring plenty of water, sunblock & bug spray. We will be there, rain or shine.
Further, the Anna Marie Ross Camp #1 participates in several Decoration Day/Memorial Day ceremonies in the Philadelphia area:
Join us at Noon on May 29, 2005 at Laurel Hill Cemetery for GAR Post #1 ceremonies followed by 4PM services for Anna Marie Ross at Lawnview Cemetery. 9AM May 30, 2005 meet at the Hospital Plot for ceremonies on the Philly side of Mt. Moriah followed by the Anna Marie Ross Camp's 117th Annual ceremonies at Independence Hall at Noon. We will complete our services at Cedar Hill Cemetery with ceremonies starting at 2PM at the Frankford Monument, including the dedication of AMR Camp #1 Brother Andy Hartman's SUVCW marker in East Cedar Hill Cemetery." |
