I had been to Mount Moriah Cemetery in July searching for my Great Grandfathers grave site. I had the death date and year but was unable to locate him in the records. My father is absolutely sure that he is buried there. Anyway the reason for this writing, I was totally distraught over the condition of this cemetery when I went in there. I actually grew up about two blocks from the cemetery. It was once a very beautiful and very well kept cemetery.
Since July I have been by there twice, most recently about a week ago and when I say that it looks even worse then it did or how it could, I truly mean it. This once proud resting place of Betsy Ross has got to be revitalized. It is a shame what has taken place there. I am distraught also to say that I am a Philadelphian after viewing what has taken place there. I have been to similar cemeteries in larger cities, in more depressed areas and the cemeteries are treated as a sacred ground as they should be. I only wish this city would take a stand and invest some funds to revitalize this ground. ............................................................. Jim Press, Sr. |
