Many thanks to Mike Brock and Anna M. Ross Camp #1, SUVCW. I was at Mount Moriah yesterday (May 27) and flags adorned the Soldier's Rest (Navy Hospital) site and all the graves I visited in the portion of the cemetery which had been cut.
While I worked to make room suitable for the flags I had brought, workmen came by with two mowers and cut me a wide swath, passing over several overturned stones as it turned out, and cleared my grave sites. Thanks to their help I was able to replace the flags of family members Bartlett Armbruster, 132nd PVI, Civil War, and Bartlett Armbruster, Sixth Armored Division. W.W.II. I also placed a flag on the grave of a non-relative, William John Smith, Jr. First Marines, First Marine Division, who by the date of his death, 9/23/1944, was probably among 6,500 marines who died in the W>W.II Battle for Peleliu. This was done in memory of the others whose grave we cannot mark because they are obscured by the callous disregard of the cemetery.
With it all, I appreciated the invaluable assistance of the cemetery staff. They have always helped me. I end this report with the parting words of one of those who assisted me, "My name is Gene. We're new here. Don't worry. It won't be like this any more." We shook on it. I hope Gene is in position to follow through.
Remember this Memorial Day those whose sacrifice gave us the land in which we live,
