I grew up living next to Mt Moriah my parents owened and operated a pizza / grocery store on the corner of 61st and Kingsessing.. I haven lived in philly since I was 11 years old; I am 35 now, let me tell you - the problem of neglect and disregard for this cemetery has been going on for many years. It was in fact just as bad in the 70s, and still people have done very little for this historic piece of ground. To think Betsy Ross was once buried at Mt Moriah! my god it should be a source of pride to the city or whoever owns the cemetery.
I for one have very fond memories of the cemetery, I remember sledding in the open parts that slopped into a hill near the park (Cobbs Creek) Its one of the happy memories I have of my dad, who passed away last year. The neighborhood in which Mt Moriah sits is one of the worst drug ridden neighborhoods in Philly. Its getting bad in the 70s - thats why we moved. I have been back a few times over the years and sadly my old home is gone, replaced by an empty lot . But Mt Moriah is still there something really peaceful about being on its grounds for a child growing up in a run down city it was a nice place to go where there was actually grass instead of cement and trees and plants instead of peoples trash thrown on the streets. Perhaps that is why I feel so bad to see that its never been properly cared for. Gianna |
