Another article came out about the marijuana discovery in Mount Moriah cemetery. Of particular interest is the comment that the cemetery is abandoned.

The article, written by Cindy Scharr, was published 9/24/2004 in the Delaware County Times.

I have transcribed it below. From field of dreams to up in smoke

'Marijuana trees' found growing in Yeadon cemetery confiscated by cops

Yeadon - A field of "marijuana trees" with a street value of up to $300,000 was discovered in the abandoned Mount Moriah Cemetery in the Cobbs Creek section of the borough Wednesday.

Philadelphia police air tactical unit was conducting a fly-over when they spotted the pot field, according to Sgt. David Splain. Some of the plants were up to 9 feet tall, he said.

Philadelphia's helicopter unit notified its narcotics unit on the ground, and they ascertained the greenery was in Yeadon's jurisdiction.

"They estimated, based on the number of trees, that it has a street value of between $250, 000 and $300,000," Slain said. "It's pretty significant."

Splain said the pot farmers went out of their way to place the plants in a desolate area.

He also said it would be extremely difficult to determine who was responsible for the marijuana field.

"It would be really difficult to pin it on somebody," he said, noting that the manpower it would take to stake out the area would be taxing on the department's manpower and budget. It is unlikely that anyone will be prosecuted, he said.

Once the marijuana is harvested and inventoried, it will be destroyed.
